Requests for new features...?

In mid-August the project group running this website is going to have a meeting to discuss what new features we should implement. As input to that meeting, I would like to hear your opinion and suggestions.
Here are a few of my own suggestions (in no particular order):

  • RSS/Atom feeds from the forum (do you use newsfeeds?)
  • User statistics - most logins, most forum messages, most active countries, etc.
  • Better search among user profiles, i.e. search by country, age (if revealed), gender (if revealed), user name and date of signing up.
  • List of latest comments on the front page
  • A mini-weblog for each user profile.
  • Highlighting of newest user gallery images on the front page

For the time being, we are going to make a prioritized list of improvements. When we have some free time, we will then start working on the top priorities.

Mmmh, all of those new features you mentioned certainly could not be a bad thing to add of course, but honestly I wouldn`t go as far as request them per se since I find the website already very useful for its purpose.  Sorry, I am not helping to find ideas ;)

I`d suppose a user-map. Might be an interesting feature to actually see, where which user comes from. Maybe there is a possibility to use google.maps for it?

Thanks for the suggestion. I thought it was interesting enough to spend a few hours on, so please check out the new "Other users" page, where users are now plotted on a map by country.

I could also have plotted users by their city, but that would require more users to fill in that particular field in their profiles. I think it would also clutter the display because of too many markers on the map.

Another map related enhancement: On every user`s profile page there is now a link "find on map" which will bring up a Google Map showing the city or country where the user lives. Pretty cool, I think!

Note that sometimes Google cannot find the city name in which case it just defaults to a map of the US. :-(

Honestly, I was really bored today, so I implemented two more small enhancements:
you can now use wikitext format in your profile description and it guestbook postings! The formatting options are the same as for the forum.

Enjoy!
