Tip for those aching ankles
For those of you that have problems with your ankles, here is a tip that may be of use to you.
Due to many untreated bleeds when I was a kid, my ankles are not in the best condition these days. Particularly walking down stairs can be a bit painful at times.
For some years, I have been using special removable insoles in some of my shoes. Although it is hard to quantify, I am pretty sure my ankles are in a better condition after using shoes with the insoles as opposed to shoes without them, when I have walked a non-trivial distance during the day.
After a week-long vacation in Prague doing a lot of walking every day (I estimate 5-10 km pr day), I think I now have a fairly solid proof of the effect of the insoles. I brought a pair of shoes that are normally very hard on my ankles, and which I have not used with the insoles before. However, knowing that I would be walking a lot, I put the insoles in. And what a difference! Even after a full day of walking, I did not feel any aching when sitting down to relax in the evening. I actually found I could walk down stairs easier on the last day.
The insoles consist of a rubbery sole with microfiber textile on top. They come in different show sizes and several different thicknesses. What the insoles do is absorb some of the energy in the impact between the shoe and the pavement and release some of the energy back when you lift your foot again.
The downside to the insoles is that your shoes must have additional "headroom" so that both the insole and your foot will actually fit. Also, I find it harder to walk precisely in a straight line, although that could just be my imagination.
The brand of insoles I use are called Green Comfort BioMechanic Energy Sole, but there are probably others.
And no, I do not get a commision for recommending these insoles...! :-)
I wonder if any of you have similar experiences?
