Does factor affect arthritis?
At the congress, I talked to someone who mentioned that when he has just taken factor concentrate the arthritis in his ancle hurts more. I found this interesting, because I have had the same feeling sometimes. However, I have not been able to substantiate this. It would be interesting to hear whether any of you feel the same, i.e. that for a time after treatment with factor concentrate, arthritis (in ancles or elsewhere) causes more pain than usual.
I also wonder whether there is any medical research on this subject - I will try to search around a bit, I think.
Anyway, on the subject of arthritis, the Haemophilia Foundation of Australia has some excellent publications on how the deal with arthritis (like exercises, dealing with pain, etc.). You will find it on their publications page (which contains a lot of very useful stuff) - look under the heading arthritis near the bottom of the page.

Hello Cicero
I find it to be the exact opposite. In general I find it hard to tell the difference between arthritis or a bleed and take the wait and see approach. I know this is not good but hay, shoot me. I have never had an issue or heard an issue from any other haemophilias in South Africa. Maybe it is the different product we are using down here?

It is the same for me - sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between arthritis and a bleed, and I also employ the wait and see approach, so shoot me too! I have started to be a bit more careful recently, though, since the damage to particularly my ancles is getting more apparent.
Even so, if I have a bleed in my right ancle and I take factor for it, I think there is a tendency for my other ancle to also hurt slightly more for a while. Actually, I think that also goes for my other major joins - they feel a little sore. Could be just my imagination, though.

It’s my right knee for me that is the main problem. My ankles seem to behave them selfs. But I do find that if I get a bleed in them and leave it to long it will throw my knee out and get this chain effect, from walking funny. So when it comes to my ankles I am very quick to treat. The best, thinking back when I was young, I would get a bleed in my toe, then my ankle would go, then my knee and sometimes my hip. This is all in my right leg, and its all due to not treating the bleeds in time. They will not go away, no matter how long u leave them.
