Vancouver 2006 - World Congress and Global NMO Training | |
Stay tuned as we bring a series of articles about the recently held WFH World Congress and the Global NMO Training in Vancouver.
The World Federation of Haemophilia (WFH) World Congress is by far the largest single event related to haemophilia. At the congress, which takes place every 2 years, top medical researchers, doctors, healthcare workers, the pharmaceutical industry and representatives from national member organisations (NMO) around the world convene to present and discuss the latest developments in treatment and care for patients with hereditary bleeding disorders. This year's congress held over five days in Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada featured a record-breaking attendance of over 4000 people. Among the medical topics discussed were new advances and recent experiments with genetic engineering, which might someday lead to a cure for haemophilia, as well as research into prolonging the effect of factor injections and comparisons of on-demand and prophylaxis treatment.
In the week prior to the congress, a Global NMO Training event was held in a suburb of Vancouver. The training event aims to build and strengthen NMOs by educating individuals who are seen as future leaders in their organisations. Over four days 110 participants from 80 countries followed a range of sessions focusing on topics that are key to the development and promotion of member organisations. The topics included fundraising, good governance and strategies for recruiting and retaining volunteers in the organisation. Just as important as the sessions themselves, many new friendships were forged in the hallways, providing avenues for cultural exchange and future cooperation.
In a series of articles we try to highlight a few of the topics from the congress and the NMO training. We do not attempt to cover everything that took place in Vancouver, but we will be happy to link to other websites that also feature articles from the congress or the NMO training.
