Questions and answers
How much does the bleeding disorder affect your life?
I am fortunate enough not to be seriously affected by my disorder. My history with haemophilia is slightly unusual - at least in Denmark - in that I was not diagnosed until the age of 14. Before then, I would have the occational swollen ancle or knee, which sometimes forced me to stay home from school. More than once, I was examined by doctors, but it was only after a major bleeding in the hip that a doctor finally thought of testing my coagulation.
Because I had untreated bleedings in my childhood, my ancles have suffered some damage. It is still no major hindrance, and it does not stop me from doing the things I want to do.
Which possibilities for treatment do you have?
Since I was diagnosed, I have always gotten the medicine I needed. Initially, I had prophylactic treatment with factor-concentrate injections every second day. At that time I was not yet used to injecting myself, so I had to go to the doctor's office to get the medicine. This quickly began to annoy me, and I found out that I could get by reasonably well without prophylaxis. Nowaday I obviously know how to take the injection and I normally treat myself one or two times a month.
What kind of contact do you have with other young people with bleeding disorders?
For the past three years I have been active in the Danish youth group. Most of my effert has gone into this web site and its Danish sister-site, but I have also helped organise a few activities. At the youth group meetings we are usually 8-15 people from all over the country. Some years ago we had two Nordic-Baltic meetings where young bleeders from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania met in Helsinki in Finland and later in Aalborg in Denmark.
What would you like to know about other young people with bleeding disorders around the world?
For me it will be very exciting to see whether we can use this website to share ideas and help each other. Particularly I am interested to learn how youth groups are working in other countries, what kinds of activities they host, how many join and so on.
